The Blues vs. Putney 16th June 22
With 11 Blues signed up for battle on Wednesday night, match managing didn't seem like the admin nightmare as what was promised. Queue Thursday morning and 2 dropouts later, oh how I was wrong... After a full day of recruitment, we had 11 once again. Smooth sailing from here I thought to myself. Oh, how I was wrong... Queue WhatsApp notification "Hi mate. I'm at a work lunch which isn't showing signs of stopping so going to be quite steaming. Not sure what the ringer network has been like this morning to pick up extras but if there is one more then I'd happily sub out." Knowing full well that the ringer network was very much depleted, all I could do was wait and hope that come 6pm we had full side of Blues, steaming or not.
Arriving at the ground half an hour early I was rather impressed to see a full side of Putney cricketers, warming up and preparing the ground. The opposition captain was keen to get the toss underway - with a roller on the deck and the slim chance of having 11 Blues by 6pm, it looks to be a win the toss and bat kind of evening. Inspired by the manufacture of the Blues' new stash TNF (tails never fails) tails was the call... Once again, I was wrong...
By 6pm we had 8 Blues, 2 messages confirming late arrivals and 1 of trouble finding a car park, so we very kindly asked to borrow a fielder and we took to the field. At the end of 5 overs, we were only 2 players down and they were 0 - 50 up. Thinking to myself once again, we could be in for a very long 20 over in the field. Sticking with the theme of the day, I was wrong once again. The 6th over bought us 2 wickets and 1 more Blue - from then on the blues were very much in control of the game. Never before have I seen such a display of fielding from the mighty Blues, hands were like buckets as not a catch was dropped, every fielder had the long barrier of 3 men making boundaries near impossible and by the 15th over, Putney was 7 - 95 we finally had 11 men and young master Digby walked across the boundary sporting a pair of white rugby shorts and a t-shirt. The game was on. After 5 more very tight overs and a few more spectacular catches, Putney was bowled out with a total score of 137. We should have this in the bag, I thought. Oh, how I was wrong...
Wickets fell thick and fast for the Blues and despite the best efforts of Nick and newcomer Yanni, we fell short of the total needing 20 in the last over for the win. Over the road we went for some of the cheapest pints in London alongside the Putney CC tradition of cinnamon whisky shots, a great evening was had by all.
